Babygirl (CA)

A cclaimed Toronto dream-pop duo Babygirl combine their knack for pop melodies, sardonic lyrical wit, and elevated lo-fi sound design to create records that have garnered international critical attention and over a million streams on Spotify alone. Principal songwriters Kiki Frances and Cameron Breithaupt co-founded the band after meeting at Toronto’s Humber College music degree program. In a jazz-leaning curriculum, they found kindred spirits in each other based on their mutual affinity for Top 40 songwriting. Together, they began writing and producing demos with the intent of pitching radio anthems to major label artists.

Quickly, they found there were other potential outlets for their creative relationship: “We love working as pop songwriters, but there are limitations as to what that can mean for our output sonically. We wanted to put together a project that was a love letter to bands like Alvvays, The Cure, and My Bloody Valentine. Bands that wouldn’t necessarily fit on contemporary hits radio,” they say of their origins, “...Like if Taylor Swift ghostwrote for a DIY bedroom act”. Upon listening, one can feel the hyper -simplistic formal elements of radio music weaving through the foggy soundscapes. They launched the project in early 2016, premiering their debut EP As You Wish via Exclaim! , who raved that "[As You Wish]... channels melancholy into melodic dream pop gems.” CBC also gave the EP acclaim, calling the indelible hook of opening track “ It's Getting Late,” "an earworm that just will not go away." Through the second half of 2017, they rolled out a series of digital singles and performed alongside acts such as Toronto Women in Music founder STACEY and Manimal Records staple artist Jenny O. The success of the duo’s endeavour as recording artists has not gotten in the way of their pursuit of pop songwriting/production cuts: from collaboration with diamond-certified superproducer Matthew Burnett (Eminem, Drake, Daniel Caesar) to penning a cut with Leah Daniels for her album The Story, (produced and co-written by Thomas Rhett collaborator Sam Ellis), which went #1 on the iTunes Canadian Country chart, Babygirl have demonstrated that their songcraft expertise is not constricted by genre.

Two years of successful releases and performances by Babygirl yielded a partnership with digital distribution giant EMPIRE (Kendrick Lamar, Brockhampton). In August of 2018, Babygirl released their sophomore EP Lovers Fevers . It’s second single, “Soft”, premiered via Stereogum who characterized it as “impeccable”. Lovers Fevers has been featured on curated channels by global platforms such as HYPEBEAST and popular indie rock curator David Dean Burkhart. The music from Lovers Fevers has been added to major streaming playlists such as; Spotify’s New Music Friday Canada , New Indie Mix , and Indie All Stars; Apple Music’s Breaking Indie ; and front page feature slots on Apple Music Canada and Tidal USA. A video for “Soft” was released via Highsnobiety on November 28th, 2018, and was accompanied by a

celebratory performance at Toronto’s The Baby G . Babygirl is now working on a debut LP, slated for release in 2020.
